Cancún, um dos destinos turísticos mais populares do México, está em meio a uma polêmica após um motorista de táxi ter sido preso sob a acusação de extorsão. O incidente envolveu um turista canadense que foi cobrado 1.000 dólares (cerca de R$ 5 mil) por uma corrida de táxi que durou apenas dois minutos.
O turista, natural de Montreal, optou pelo táxi ao invés de utilizar o serviço de transfer gratuito oferecido pelo Aeroporto de Cancún entre os terminais 4 e 3. O que ele não esperava era que a corrida, que deveria custar cerca de 5 dólares, resultasse em uma tarifa astronômica. Ao perceber a cobrança exorbitante, o canadense se opôs, mas o motorista, em vez de resolver a situação pacificamente, tentou fugir com as bagagens do passageiro.
O turista conseguiu reentrar no veículo e resgatar seus pertences, mas sua experiência negativa não parou por aí. Ao solicitar ajuda à segurança do aeroporto, ele percebeu que os agentes foram pouco prestativos, levando-o a suspeitar que estivessem envolvidos no esquema fraudulento. A situação só foi controlada quando a Polícia foi acionada e prendeu o motorista do táxi.

I was traveling to the airport going back to Montreal Canada at 2am Wednesday night / Thursday Morning the 18th of April 2024 when I got set up by the taxi company from the airport and the security at Terminal 3. They told me I could not stay there and need to pay another taxi ( from the airport! ) to go to Terminal 4 for 5$ which I did. I was alone with the 2 security and the only taxi available when they start pressuring me to pay via Credit card. I did not want to but I had no other choice and could walk between terminal they told me. After paying with my card and getting back in the Taxi for only 2 minute I Realized the payment that went on my card was over 1000$ . I was still in the car and the situation escalated at the Terminal 4 where I managed to get the attention of the touriste and traveler waiting for they flights. When the taxi saw the security he tried to escape with me and my luggage in the car but I manage to jump in the front of the car and shift the transmission on Park which almost result in a car accident. The airport security arrived just in time before situation got even more crazy. I filled a report number against the driver and the taxi airport , I believe some of the cops and security agent over there where also in the scam because they wanted me to go the police station to press charge against the driver but to only get rid of my story and all the proof I have against the scam system at the airport including Security and the Airport Taxi Company. I believe if I would stop the car in time something even worst was waiting for me. Are these scammers still working at the Cancun Airport?! A Procuradoria Geral do Estado entrou com uma acusação formal contra o motorista por extorsão. As autoridades estaduais e federais garantem que estão investigando o caso para erradicar práticas fraudulentas como esta no aeroporto. “Histórias negativas como essa prejudicam a economia local”, destacou um porta-voz da Procuradoria, ressaltando a importância de manter a confiança dos turistas.
Em Cancún, o serviço de transfer gratuito entre os terminais é oferecido a cada dez minutos, mas nem sempre funciona de forma eficiente, levando muitos passageiros a optarem pelo táxi. Essa prática não é exclusiva de Cancún, pois aeroportos em todo o mundo, como o Aeroporto Heathrow em Londres, também observam essa preferência por parte dos passageiros.
